Description
Ella says, “Lately I have wanted to zoom in and really study Australian plants in some detail. I have been creating artworks of plants at a larger than life scale. The waratah is the state emblem of New South Wales where I live. You see it in stylised form in lots of decoration and on documentation (for example on NSW Drivers Licenses). It is such a dramatic, stunning plant with a beautiful flower that grows on the end of the branches. I was interested in capturing the sculptural qualities of the plant by focusing on a single stem. I allowed a greater range of colours in the leaves and kept the flower mainly scarlet. The close-up quality is also aided by having the leaves extend beyond the composition. I chose to paint the background in a flat grey gouache to really contrast with the ink and watercolour sections.”
The original artwork was created using ink applied with a bamboo nib, Inktense pencils, watercolour and gouache paint.
